Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and How They Help You Streamline the Hiring Process

Finding the right candidate for a role can be a major challenge, a challenge that gets more and more complex when hiring for major roles or in large numbers. With the average time to fill a vacant role being upward of a month, many recruiters are forced into working sizeable overtime or filling the gaps with lower quality candidates in order to cater to demand.

Over the years many different systems have been trialed in order to streamline the hiring process and take some of the guesswork out of recruitment; the leading solution that has been adopted globally by some of the biggest Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 is that of an Applicant Tracking System - or ATS System for short.

What is an Applicant Tracking System?

An Applicant Tracking System is – as the name implies – a system for tracking and sorting the applicants that have applied for a job vacancy throughout the recruitment process. While this may not seem like anything major at first, when looking at hundreds of candidates to fill several dozen openings it quickly becomes the difference between a never-ending struggle with a bundle of paperwork and a streamlined process highlighting the most capable and relevant applicants for the role. One of the main benefits to a ATS System is the feature which automatically identifies candidates based on experience, skills, and other differentiating features; this allows recruiters to hone in on applicants who best cater to the job spec while removing the need to look through those that don’t. Overall, an applicant tracking system is a hugely customisable recruitment tool that makes the entire recruitment process far less strenuous for both the recruiter and recruiting company.

Removing Low Quality Candidates

Every recruiter with any experience in the field would be able to tell you that one of the worst parts of the role is having to filter through countless low-quality CVs. It’s pretty common to see numerous applicants who do not meet the required experience or training applying for a role; “even though I don’t quite meet the job spec, it’s worth a punt, right?” While this is understandable from a job-seeker’s perspective, a recruiter will likely now have to look through dozens of applicants who are just there to ‘take a punt’. One of the key benefits to the Applicant Tracking System is the ability to filter candidates based on skill and experience allowing for the discounting of candidates who do not meet the job spec.

Automated Interviews

With many Applicant Tracking Systems boasting their very own calendar features as well as interview scheduling, getting in contact with applicants is made far simpler. Many of the latest Applicant Tracking Systems can also send out automated emails to organise interviews and recruiter contact, a key feature when dealing with many applicants at a time or hiring for multiple separate roles.
